Click to Pay: Visa and Mastercard’s Answer to Digital Wallets

Click to Pay is the card network industry’s answer to digital wallets — a standardized, tokenized card-on-file experience that allows customers to check out using their saved Visa, Mastercard, American Express, or Discover card without re-entering their details. Developed under the EMVCo Secure Remote Commerce (SRC) standard, Click to Pay aims to bring Apple Pay-style frictionless checkout to all cards, not just those on Apple devices.

How Click to Pay Works

  1. Customer enrollment: The customer saves their card to Click to Pay once through any participating bank, card network, or checkout experience. Their email address becomes their Click to Pay identifier.
  2. Checkout recognition: When a Click to Pay customer visits a participating merchant checkout, they’re recognized by email and offered their saved cards as a one-click option.
  3. Tokenized payment: The selected card is charged using a network token — not the raw card number — with dynamic cryptogram authentication for each transaction.
  4. Biometric or OTP confirmation: Depending on the customer’s device and enrollment, they may authenticate via biometric or OTP to confirm the payment.

Click to Pay vs. Apple Pay / Google Pay

Factor Click to Pay Apple/Google Pay
Device requirement Any device (email-based) Apple/Android device
Card support Visa, MC, Amex, Discover Most cards (network-dependent)
Tokenization Network tokens Device tokens
Checkout speed One click (returning customers) One tap (biometric)
Consumer awareness Growing High (Apple Pay)

Why Click to Pay Matters for Merchants

Click to Pay extends frictionless, tokenized checkout to customers who aren’t on Apple or Google devices — including desktop shoppers, Android users without Google Pay set up, and customers who prefer to use cards not stored in device wallets. As consumer awareness grows, Click to Pay is becoming a meaningful supplement to device-based digital wallets.
